Myths vs Facts: Keeping Your Home Cool This Summer

Many homeowners think keeping a home cool during summer is all about blasting the aircon all day. In reality, smart design and simple adjustments can make a big difference in comfort and energy efficiency.

At True North Construction Services, we help our clients build and improve homes that stay cool even during peak heat. Here are some common myths and the facts behind them.

Myth: DIY house building saves money without needing a professional contractor for ventilation planning.

While skipping a contractor feels cheaper initially, poorly planned ventilation leads to higher long-term energy bills, discomfort, and repairs—professional design with proper airflow, window placement, and exhaust saves far more on AC/electricity over decades.

Fact: Amateur designs often overlook proper ventilation, ignoring cross-breezes, zoning, and airflow paths, leading to heat buildup and trapped humidity.

With True North Construction Services, every home is designed with ventilation in mind, from strategic window placement and higher ceilings to ridge vents and efficient exhaust systems. The result is cooler spaces, better airflow, and reduced reliance on air conditioning.

Myth: Turning off your refrigerator at night saves significant energy and keeps your home cooler.

While it might seem like less appliance use equals less heat, fridges generate minimal heat overall (mostly vented outside), and cycling them off leads to food spoilage risks without meaningfully dropping indoor temps. In hot PH summers, focus on ventilation and light exteriors instead, fridge heat is negligible compared to solar gain through roofs/windows.

Fact: Modern fridges use ~1-2 kWh/day with efficient compressors that don't overheat rooms. Shutting them off spikes restart energy (surge draw) and wastes cooling already invested. Indoor heat sources like cooking/people dominate—0.1-0.2°C impact at best from a fridge.

Myth: Insulators are just a waste of money.

Fact: Foam insulation acts as a barrier that minimizes heat transfer. It keeps the heat outside while maintaining cool air inside, making your home more comfortable throughout the day. This reduces the need for constant air conditioning and helps lower electricity costs over time.

At True North Construction Services, we believe comfort starts with smart design and proper planning. Whether you are building a new home or improving your current space, we are here to help you create a cooler and more efficient home this summer.
